Lavender is a popular flowering plant for garden and pot culture. Altogether there are between 25 to 30 different species that reach quite different heights.

Low and high-growing varieties - an overview
From a botanical point of view, lavender belongs to the subshrubs and not, as is often assumed, to the perennials. On average, the different varieties can grow between 30 to 60 centimeters in height, with some species remaining shorter and others growing taller. In the overview below you can see what height the different lavenders reach.
Low growing lavender
In general, many varieties of French lavender, also known as butterfly lavender, are quite low-growing. These reach an average of between 40 and 60 centimeters in height. On the other hand, the following varieties of real lavender, Lavandula angustifolia in Latin, which are sometimes also referred to as dwarf lavender, remain particularly small:
- 'Dwarf Blue' (height between 20 to 30 centimeters, blue flowers)
- 'Peter Pan' (between 25 and 35 centimeters high, purple flowers)
- 'Blue Scent' (between 25 to 40 centimeters high, blue flowers)
- 'Munstead' (between 30 and 50 centimeters high, dark blue flowers)
Lavender with a medium height
In particular, many varieties of real lavender reach an average height of between about 40 and 60 centimeters, including the following popular species:
- 'Hidecote' (height between 40 to 50 centimetres, dark purple flowers)
- 'Miss Katherine' (between 50 and 60 centimeters high, pink flowering)
Some varieties of Lavandin are only between 50 and 60 centimeters high:
- Grappenhall (dark blue flowers)
- Edelweiss (white flowering)
Tall lavender varieties
High-growing lavender varieties reach heights of between 60 centimeters and up to one meter. Spike lavender in particular and some varieties of Provence lavender can grow very tall. Spike lavender reaches average heights between 80 to 100 centimeters.
- 'Imperial Gem' (Lavandula angustifolia, between 70 to 80 centimetres, dark purple flowers)
- 'Grosso' (Lavandula intermedia, between 60 and 70 centimetres, purple flowers)
- 'Hidecote Giant' (Lavandula intermedia, between 60 and 70 centimetres, light purple flowers)
However, how tall your lavender actually grows depends less on the specific variety and more on the site conditions and care. The more comfortable your lavender feels, the more profusely it will grow and bloom.
tips and tricks
Lavender naturally grows upwards. However, when it reaches a certain height, it lies on its side due to its own weight - it "hangs". Last but not least, you should prune the plants regularly.
