Many plant seeds don't care much whether it's light or dark - they germinate as soon as the appropriate conditions, such as warmth and moisture, are present. Other seeds, on the other hand, need darkness, the so-called dark germs, or light to germinate. The latter are referred to as light germs. This includes lavender.

Provide sufficient brightness
Lavender is usually propagated from cuttings, but you can also grow the flowering plants yourself from seeds from February. The commercially available lavender seeds usually come from real lavender and are rarely of a single variety. This means that the lavender plants grown from seed can look very different. When sowing the lavender, you must make sure that the fine seeds are not covered with soil or only very thinly. Lavender is a light germinator and therefore needs light for the grains to begin to germinate. For this reason, you need a location that is as bright as possible for the plant bowl or the growing pot. However, since February is usually too dark for the sun-kissed Mediterranean plants, a special plant lamp (€21.99) can provide more brightness.
Sow lavender properly
In order for you to be successful when sowing the lavender, we have put together the following tips for you:
- Pre-grow lavender towards the end of winter/spring if possible.
- Otherwise it can happen that the plants start flowering too late and cannot mature before winter.
- Take a nursery pot, planter or indoor greenhouse.
- Fill in there nutrient-poor potting soil. Herb soil usually works very well too.
- Press the earth lightly.
- Dampen the substrate with water from a spray bottle, but don't let it be wet.
- Sow the fine seeds on the ground.
- Press them lightly into the moist soil.
- Put the potty in a light and warm place.
- If necessary, install a plant lamp.
- The seedlings are pricked out and repotted as soon as the first tender leaves have grown next to the two cotyledons.
tips and tricks
In contrast to many other seeds, lavender does not need a greenhouse climate to germinate, so it is best not to put bags or transparent film over the pot. Lavender germinates best at temperatures around 15°C.
