While direct sowing coriander can be scarce with the seed harvest, growing it indoors gives a considerable growth advantage. Here we explain in a practical way how you can easily grow the Mediterranean spice plant yourself at home.

The best time and recommended seed pots

So that the cultivation in the house works like clockwork, the time has to be chosen carefully. In order to be able to transplant vigorous and compact young plants into the bed, sowing indoors must not start before March. Otherwise the seedlings will wither due to the too dark light conditions.

Since coriander plants that have been brought forward do not like to relocate, we recommend sowing in peat press pots. These can later be planted in the bed and pot together with the root ball. This significantly reduces the stress on the plants and keeps them happy.

This is how you can sow seeds on the windowsill

The fresher the seed, the faster germination will occur. To what extent soaking the seeds has a beneficial effect here is a matter of controversy among hobby gardeners. This is how you approach the project step by step:

  • fill the growing pots with peat sand, herb or seed soil
  • press and moisten the substrate a little
  • Sow 1-2 seeds per pot and only thinly sieve over them as light germinators

Ideally, a greenhouse is available to place the seed pots in. Alternatively, put a plastic bag over each pot. Germination starts within 1 week in a semi-shady place at temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. The plastic hood has now done its job and falls away.

Planting out seedlings - how to do it right

When there is no longer any threat of ground frost outdoors, plant the young plants in the bed. Choose a sunny to partially shaded location. The soil should be rich in nutrients, humus and, above all, well drained. Now you benefit from the peat press pots, because these are planted together with the coriander plant. When watering, be careful not to water your pets from above.

tips and tricks

With a precisely balanced temperature, you counteract the dreaded shooting when growing coriander. As long as the temperature does not clearly exceed the 20 degree mark of the thermometer, the seedlings will develop a compact habit.
