Marjoram does not require much maintenance. However, it can be useful to cut the plant occasionally. Then it grows bushier. Especially with the wild marjoram, the oregano, a strong pruning is advisable if the plants grow too much.

How to properly cut marjoram

You can of course cut marjoram with a sharp knife. However, it works better with sharp scissors. This will give you clean cuts and prevent the stems from fraying.

Harvest the desired amount of marjoram by cutting off only about a third of the stalk. Many small branches form under the cut, making the plant bushier.

This also extends the harvest time, because you can cut fresh marjoram three times from each stalk.

The best time to cut marjoram and oregano

  • Cut from July
  • Also cut during flowering and afterwards
  • Cut back occasionally
  • Remove top third only

You can cut marjoram throughout the garden year as soon as the stems are long enough. The herb is also edible during and after flowering. However, it is no longer quite as aromatic after the flowering period.

If you want to harvest particularly spicy herbs, you should cut the marjoram just before it starts to bloom.

Oregano contains more essential oils during flowering than before and after. It is much more aromatic at this time.

Grow bushy marjoram plants

If the marjoram plant grows very thin, you should grab a pair of scissors.

Cut off a few stems far below. The marjoram will sprout again in these places and the plant will appear more compact.

Cut oregano plants

Unlike marjoram, oregano occasionally needs a vigorous pruning because the plants tend to spread uncontrollably.

Cut it back to within a hand's breadth of the ground. You will then get vigorous plants that form many stems and flowers.

Before winter, you should cut back oregano outdoors and, to be on the safe side, provide it with a light winter protection.

tips and tricks

If you have harvested a lot of marjoram when pruning, conserve it by drying. The herb is not so well suited for freezing because it loses too much flavor.
