The age of a lemon balm defines the need for irrigation water. Self-grown or freshly bought young plants are watered in the bed according to a different rhythm than established plants.

How to handle it correctly:

  • water young lemon balm regularly
  • allow the soil to dry between waterings
  • if in doubt, do a thumb test before watering

For older lemon balm, the natural rainfall is sufficient to cover the need for water. Watering is only done when it is dry in summer. Choose either the early morning hours or late evening hours. Plants should not be watered in direct sunlight.

Water lemon balm in the pot more often

In the tightly limited volume of a bucket, lemon balm can hardly stretch out its roots in search of water. Older specimens are also regularly watered here when the upper 4-5 centimeters of the substrate have dried. A hard and fast schedule does not apply here, as the pot size and temperature determine the exact water requirements. This principle also applies to lemon balm as a houseplant.
