Peppermint is an accidental product that most likely originated in England in the 17th century. Because of its high proportion of essential oils, it has since been valued almost everywhere in the world as a tea or medicinal.

Peppermint is a cultivated plant

Peppermint is almost never found in nature. It is only grown as a crop on herb farms, in gardens and on balconies. Only in the vicinity of gardens does the plant spread via runners or, more rarely, via seeds.

Peppermint, which we like to use today as a tea or spice, originated in England. It was discovered there in the 17th century. It appeared near large plants in which different types of mint were grown. The “mothers” of mint are:

  • Round-leaved mint
  • Brook mint
  • Spearmint (also called Spearmint)

What makes peppermint different from other types of mint?

Peppermint has a menthol content that is higher than other types of mint. In return, the random cross contains less of the essential oil carvone.

In terms of taste, peppermint differs from other mints in that it has a rather sharp aroma. This gave the new crop the nickname "pepper".

Mint is found on every continent

The fact that England of all places is the origin of peppermint is due to a coincidence. There are hundreds of different varieties of mint almost everywhere in the world.

Even in ancient times, mint was used as a medicinal herb for many ailments. That is why the herbs were often grown in large herb gardens.

This is what happened in the English town of Mitchum, near which the first peppermint with its sharp, refreshing aroma developed from three types of mint. Probably the oldest variety of peppermint is called Black Mitchum for a reason.

Triumphant march around the world

The new hybrid quickly gained widespread acceptance due to its unique blend of essential oils. Today it is planted in gardens and herb farms on every continent.

tips and tricks

In Germany, peppermint is sold almost exclusively under the generic term (Mentha x piperita). There are numerous varieties that differ in appearance and, above all, in taste. Peppermint lovers should take a look at specialized seed and plant shops.
