Comfrey - this decorative and medicinal plant enriches the garden in many ways. It can even be used as a natural fertilizer! This saves enormous costs and is particularly popular in organic cultivation. For those who prefer not to use artificial fertilizers…

What is so special about comfrey manure?
Although comfrey is poisonous in high doses. As a fertilizer it is harmless. Unlike conventional artificial fertilizers, which mainly contain nitrogen and phosphorus and aim to promote plant growth, comfrey manure contains important nutrients such as potassium in addition to nitrogen and phosphorus.
With the help of a comfrey manure you can strengthen your plants in the garden or in the planter on the balcony. It increases their resistance to pests such as spider mites and aphids as well as fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and shotgun disease.
Start the liquid manure
How to prepare the liquid manure:
- Cut off the leaves and stems from the comfrey in summer
- Roughly chop plant parts
- Pour 1 kg of fresh herb with 10 liters of water, e.g. B. in a bucket
- cover with a cloth to prevent insects from entering
- Stir 1 to 2 times a day to allow oxygen to enter
You can tell whether the comfrey manure is ready at two points. For one, the liquid manure should no longer be foamy. On the other hand, it should smell fermented. If this is the case, the manure is ready for use.
Combine the comfrey manure with nettle manure
The liquid manure becomes more holistic if you combine it with nettle liquid manure. Nettles also contain a high content of iron and magnesium, among others. You can start the leaves of comfrey and nettle together, or you can pour the manure of both together at the end. Even dried comfrey leaves can be used for manure.
The liquid manure in action
When the liquid manure is ready, you can use it both outdoors in the garden and on the balcony. It is ideal for heavy feeders such as tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, pumpkins, celery, potatoes and herbs such as lovage.
The liquid manure is diluted 10 times. So 1 liter of liquid manure + 1ß liters of water. Just pour the whole thing into a large watering can. Caution: Pour directly onto the soil and do not sprinkle the leaves of the plants. The liquid manure would damage the leaves.
Alternatively, you can save yourself the trouble and do not use any liquid manure. The soil can also be mulched with the edible leaves of comfrey to enrich it with nutrients. These release their nutrients slowly and over the long term through mulching.
