Verbenas come in a variety of forms. Planting them successfully is not a gardening feat. If you haven't tried it yet, don't despair. But the following aspects should be kept in mind when planting…

Which location do verbena prefer?

Verbena prefers to grow in a south-facing location in full sun. A semi-shady location is a compromise for these mostly not hardy plants. They can be planted in pots and tubs as well as outdoors in beds.

Ideally, the soil should be mixed with compost or manure before planting or sowing. For plants on the balcony, normal potting soil and a later regular supply of liquid fertilizer is sufficient. Basically, the substrate should have the following properties:

  • nutritious
  • permeable
  • humid environment
  • calcareous to neutral
  • humorous

When should verbena be sown?

Since most types of verbena are not perennial, they have to be revived every year by sowing. Verbena often multiply by self-seeding. Sowing in open ground is carried out in May at a distance of 30 cm.

Is moving at home recommended?

If you want to plant verbena on your balcony, you can bring them indoors from February. The room temperature should be between 19 and 20 °C. From the end of May you can put the plants outside.

When do verbena bloom and when can their seeds be collected?

Verbena blooms happily from April through to autumn if their faded inflorescences are cut off regularly. In autumn, the fruit capsules with the seeds emerge. The seeds can be collected in late autumn. Attention: When ripe, the fruit capsules burst and carry the seeds outside…

Are there suitable plant neighbors?

Verbena look best in tuffs of three to five plants. They look good next to plant neighbors such as corn poppies, astilbes, petunias (on the balcony), foxglove, ragweed and magnificent candles.
