All types of mint thrive in pots. The herbal plants find ideal conditions here and are always ready to hand for harvest. How to properly plant mint on the balcony is explained in the following lines in a practical way.

Cultivation by sowing creates vital young plants - this is how it works

For ambitious hobby gardeners, it is a matter of honor to grow mint by sowing them yourself. The project will be tackled from the beginning of March so that strong young plants are ready by May. How to proceed:

  • fill a seed tray or seed pots (16.68€) with seed soil or peat sand
  • moisten the substrate well with a fine spray
  • mix the fine seeds with bird sand and sow
  • cover with glass or cling film

At a partially shaded window seat at a constant temperature of 20 degrees and higher, germination begins within 10 to 14 days. When the seedlings have reached a height of 2-3 centimetres, they are pricked out in herbal or pricked out soil. During this time the substrate must not dry out.

Step-by-step guide to skillful planting

A suitable pot for mint on the balcony has a diameter of at least 30 centimeters. In addition, there is an opening in the bottom as a water drain so that there is no waterlogging. Use broken pottery or grit (€46.95) to create drainage over this floor opening, which is covered with a water- and air-permeable fleece to protect it from crumbling soil. This is how it goes on:

  • fill the bucket halfway with herbal soil, enriched with compost and horn shavings
  • Make a small depression in the substrate to insert the potted young plant
  • fill with the remaining soil to just under the first pair of leaves and water

So that the young mint does not fall over, it is supported on the right and left in the form of small wooden sticks. Once the plant is well rooted, the support has done its job. Water mint on the balcony plentifully and regularly without causing waterlogging.

tips and tricks

Don't worry about molehills in the garden anymore. The diggers also have a good side. The raised earth is considered an excellent propagation substrate. For sowing, mix with a little sand and put in the seed pots. Even hesitant seeds put on the botanical turbo.
