Nobody knows exactly where the chives come from. Some suspect its homeland in China, others in the Mediterranean region. The fact is, however, that the undemanding plant thrives mainly in the northern mountain regions and is therefore insensitive to low frost temperatures.

Overwinter chives
The herb easily tolerates temperatures down to minus 25 °C. To prepare the plant for the winter, you should cut it all the way down in the fall and cover it with a thick layer of mulch (€239.00) or brushwood. Further care measures are not necessary. The plant will sprout again in spring.
Overwinter the chives in the pot
Potted chives can also easily overwinter outside, for example on the balcony. Cut it down in good time before the first frost and cover the substrate with mulch. Chives that are kept indoors also need a resting phase in winter, preferably in a bright but cool room.
tips and tricks
It is true that chives are hardy and can withstand even the lowest temperatures. However, pot chives that are left in frozen soil can quickly die of thirst. Therefore, make sure that you only water your balcony plants on frost-free days if possible.
