Colorful, floriferous and tender - that's what they are, the mallows. Planting them doesn't take much effort and they are undemanding to boot. But the following aspects should be kept in mind when planting.

Which location is suitable?

Mallows are considered adaptable when it comes to finding a suitable location. But they prefer to grow in a sunny spot. There they form the most flowers. They also do well in semi-shade.

High-growing mallows such as the hollyhock or the flowered mallow, which like to reach a size of up to 2 m, should be planted in a sheltered location. In addition, it is advisable to tie them to a stick to prevent twisting.

What properties should the floor have?

A normal garden soil is sufficient for mallows. The only thing they can't get along with is compacted and peaty soils. Ideally, the substrate should have the following characteristics:

  • moderately nutritious to nutritious
  • humorous
  • permeable
  • slightly calcareous
  • fresh to moist environment

What planting distance is necessary?

In principle, you can use a minimum planting distance of 30 cm as a guide. Also remember that the distance above is important when planting your mallow in a pot on the balcony. Some types of mallow are extremely tall.

How are they sown?

Planting a purchased mallow is not worth much. These costs can be saved, because mallows are usually easy to germinate and sowing is easy. Many species such as the hollyhock or the bush mallow sprout again every year. Other species like to self-seed…

The following must be observed when sowing:

  • Preference is unnecessary
  • Direct sowing between March and May
  • Dark germinators: cover seeds 1 to 2 cm thick with soil
  • Germination temperature: 15 to 20 °C
  • Germination time: 2 to 3 weeks

When do mallows bloom?

Depending on the type of mallow and provided that it is cared for in a manner appropriate to the species, mallows bloom at different times. While some species bloom in May, other species bloom from June or July. The flowering period can last until September.
