The kiwi fruits are harvested immature. When stored in a cool, dark place, they will continue to ripen and develop their full aroma if they are placed in a warm place for a few days and placed next to the apples.

The fact that kiwis are a climacteric fruit means that we can enjoy the fruit all year round. They are harvested unripe in the growing countries and continue to ripen while they are transported and then stored.

Store purchased kiwis

When buying kiwis, pay attention to their degree of ripeness. If you buy the fruits in advance, they can be as hard as potatoes. The hard fruits can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks without any problems and placed in a warm place with the other fruit for a few days before eating. If the kiwis are to be used immediately after purchase, choose the fruit that feels a little softer.

Store kiwis from your own harvest

In the meantime, the kiwi plants have also found their way into the home gardens. The exotic climbing fruit also delivers good yields in this country if the variety is appropriate to the location. In temperate climates, kiwis are harvested immature between late October and early November, possibly after the first light frost. Fruits harvested too early remain sour.

After harvesting, the kiwis are stored in a cool place for a few weeks until they are ready to eat. Temperatures of 10 to 15° C are ideal, e.g. B. in the basement. Single layer storage in crates is beneficial for shelf life. Fruits intended for early consumption should be brought to a warm place a few days beforehand, where they will soften and develop their full aroma.

tips and tricks

Most kiwis come to Germany from Italy, New Zealand or Chile. They are harvested from April to June in the southern hemisphere and from October in southern Europe.
