Forsythia that is not pruned regularly tends to spread and become woody. The bushes that have gotten out of shape are not only not a pretty sight. They hardly have any flowers either. Forsythia therefore needs a makeover every two to three years.

Why do forsythias need rejuvenation?
If forsythia is not rejuvenated, the shoots will become woody in the middle and branch out profusely. The bush no longer gets any light inside, so that neither leaves nor flowers can develop.
Rejuvenation can prevent the spring bloomers from aging and hardly producing any flowers.
Every two or three years at the latest, you should grab the pruning shears and saw and remove the woody shoots of the forsythia.
The best time to rejuvenate
Theoretically, you are allowed to perform the taper cut at any time. However, the best time is in winter. In cold temperatures, the shrubs survive pruning better. Fungal diseases can be avoided in this way.
Even right after flowering, there is still time to rejuvenate the forsythia. The shrub then has enough time to form new shoots. Only on these will many of the yellow flowers grow next year.
If you rejuvenate the forsythia heavily in the fall, you must expect that the shrub will flower little or not at all next spring.
This is how old shoots are removed
What you need to rejuvenate the forsythia:
- Sharp secateurs
- Hedge trimmer (77.00€) (for forsythia hedges)
- pruning saw
- Possibly electric saw
- gloves
Thin out the crown by removing strong branches. Also cut off any older shoots that have obviously not flowered yet. This can be seen from the fact that there are no remains of flowers on the shoots.
Cutting the woody branches can be quite a hassle. They can often only be removed with a saw. Saw off these shoots as close to the ground as possible.
tips and tricks
Even if the forsythia is very old, you can still dare to radically prune the shrub. It drives reliably again. You should not expect only one flower in the first year after such a pruning.
