To make a newly seeded lawn germinate faster, cover it with clear plastic. It protects against drying out and warms the soil. Due to the higher temperatures, the grass seeds also germinate earlier.

Why cover the lawn seed?
Covering the lawn seed after sowing has a number of advantages:
- The surface is protected from drying out
- Even seed distribution
- Greenhouse climate ensures rapid germination
- Protects against accidental access
- Protects the lawn seed from hungry birds
Use clear growth film
If you want to protect the new lawn with a cover, use special growth films. They are available in garden shops. Alternatively, you can use clear plastic wrap.
Sow the lawn seed evenly and sprinkle the ground evenly, preferably with a lawn sprinkler that is set to be gentle.
Only when the area is well moistened but not completely soaked is the cover sheet stretched over the lawn and attached to the sides with stones or earth. The foil must not lie flat on the ground so that the plants have some space to grow underneath.
Greenhouse climate under the cover
A veritable greenhouse climate develops under the film due to the sun. The surface does not dry out in wind and strong sunlight, but remains evenly moist. As a result, the grass seeds germinate very quickly.
With a cover, you don't have to worry about sudden heavy rain. The seed cannot be washed away under the film, so large gaps or gaps cannot develop.
The newly laid lawn is also protected because it is immediately apparent that something has been sown here. This means that the area is not entered accidentally. Birds pecking at seeds don't stand a chance because the cover prevents them from getting to the seeds.
Remove cover
As soon as the first roots of the lawn plants are anchored in the ground, the tarpaulin is removed so that the lawn gets enough air.
tips and tricks
If you are looking to rejuvenate an old lawn that is riddled with weeds, covering it with an opaque tarp will help. This includes not only the grass plants, but also the weeds. The film should remain in place for a longer period of time.
