A dense, green lawn that stretches evenly across the garden is one of the standards in German gardens. In order to get a really level surface without dips and hills, you need to level the soil before sowing.

Why does the ground need to be leveled?
- Earth's surface is pressed down
- Depressions and hills can be compensated
- Ensures a level lawn
The best soil preparation for planting a new lawn is to loosen the soil and remove all weeds, especially root weeds.
The surface is then leveled with a leveling roller. This presses the ground down well. It will then no longer sink so much later and can be sown earlier.
Leveling eliminates any irregularities such as dips and elevations. Otherwise, the rainwater accumulates in the depressions. This allows the grass roots to rot.
This is how you plan properly
The right time for leveling work is a rain-free day when the ground is as dry as possible.
First, the future lawn is roughened with a rake. Remove root remains, larger stones and soil thickening.
Recognizable depressions should already be filled with topsoil or garden soil and small elevations removed. Only then will the surface be really flat.
Use of the leveling roller
As soon as the preliminary work is completed, go over the ground with the leveling roller. This compacts the surface and prevents it from sinking later when the soil settles.
Work in heelless shoes and tread lightly to avoid leaving footprints on the surface. Of course, this cannot be avoided entirely.
After leveling, examine the surface to make sure it is really level and touch up if necessary.
Rough up the soil before sowing
Due to the grading work, the surface is very solid. It is therefore lightly roughened again with a rake before sowing.
tips and tricks
The leveling rollers, which you can borrow from hardware stores, are hollow on the inside. This makes them easier to transport. Before grading, you must fill the roller with water so that the device can exert enough pressure on the ground.
