The new year has dawned. Many gardeners are impatient in the starting blocks. Now is the right time to push the flower cane at home. But why and how does that work?

Benefits of forcing canna

Promoting canna in the home has several advantages. The benefit that most convinces most canna-lovers is that the buds appear earlier. Furthermore, pushing forward has the advantage of being able to plant out strong young plants later, which will not die so quickly. On top of that, the small canna plants bring lively greenery into the living room and it's fun to propel them forward.

Carrying out the propulsion of Canna

Hibernation of the rhizomes of canna can end in January. Then it's time to push forward. Remove soil from the rhizomes and trim the roots.

Then it is good if the rhizomes are divided into pieces with one to three eyes. Sort out unusable parts and compost them. The other sections go into a 2/3 filled with soil and 8 to 10 cm wide pot.

This is how it goes on:

  • Place the rhizomes with the eyes horizontal and in the middle of the pot
  • Cover rhizomes with soil up to the rim of the pot
  • water sparingly
  • place in a bright and warm place (e.g. on a window sill above a heater)
  • ideal temperature: 20 to 25 °C
  • after 1 to 2 weeks the shoots shoot out of the ground

The following applies: Everything else as usual

Canna's planting time does not change as it advances. Only after the last frost in spring should the young plants that have been driven out at home be planted out. This is usually the case between mid and late May (after the Ice Saints). Directly when planting out, the cannas should be placed in a nutrient-rich and pre-fertilized soil.

tips and tricks

Beware of sunburn: slowly acclimate your young cannas to direct sunlight. In spring, place the pots outside on the balcony or terrace for a few hours every day during the day.
