It is fascinating how snowdrops fight their way through an ice-cold blanket of snow with their delicate flowers. Not only garden owners can witness this spectacle. Snowdrops are easy to grow in pots. You can find out how to do this below…

Which location is suitable for snowdrops in pots?

Snowdrops in a pot can be placed on a balcony, a terrace, at the entrance to the house or in front of the gazebo. It is important that the location is semi-shady to shady. In the blazing sun, snowdrops can dry out quickly in the pot.

The substrate: The main thing is that it is well drained

The pot in which the snowdrop is planted should be at least 4 times the height of the bulb of the plant. At the very bottom go potsherds or pebbles. They prevent water from accumulating and damaging the roots. Next comes a layer of soil over the drainage.

The bulb of the snowdrop should be covered with soil at least 5 cm thick. It is placed in the ground with the tip up. Up to 5 bulbs can be placed in each planting hole.

Normal store-bought potting soil is usually sufficient to keep snowdrops happy. Snowdrops value the following properties of the earth:

  • relaxed
  • humorous
  • moderately to well nutritious
  • easy to keep moist
  • alkaline to neutral

Planting time of the early bloomer: During flowering

The bulbs should be planted in the pots in autumn between September and November. Pre-cultivated snowdrops from the garden center are bought and planted when they bloom between late January and early February.

Care requirements: pour and fertilize

When it comes to care, snowdrops in pots attach great importance to a good supply of water. In addition, they should be fertilized with liquid fertilizer during and shortly after their flowering period.

Remove faded flowers

The formation of seeds robs a snowdrop of immense strength. It is therefore advisable to cut off its withered flower before the capsule fruit can develop with the seeds. Most snowdrops have withered in March.

tips and tricks

If there is a severe frost in winter, the pot with the snowdrop bulbs should be moved to a less cold place. The earth should not freeze completely. Otherwise the onion will suffer.
