Hyacinths delight every gardener's heart with their fragrant blossoms. In the garden, they grow in the same place for many years. The robust bulbous plants do not need much care outdoors. The location is particularly important.

The right location makes the difference

Hyacinths grow best in a sunny spot. They only thrive in partial shade if they get at least three hours of sun a day.

The soil must be well drained and slightly nutritious. Mix solid soil with sand or gravel to avoid waterlogging. Some mature compost in the planting holes is sufficient as fertilization.

In the spring, the soil can be damp because the hyacinth needs sufficient moisture during the flowering period. In the summer after flowering, the plant takes a rest period when it likes to be dry.

The best time to plant the tubers

  • September and October
  • In spring as early as possible
  • Plants brought forward when it is no longer freezing

The best time to plant the hyacinth bulbs is in the fall. During the winter, the tuber has time to develop and also gets the necessary frost.

If necessary, you can also plant hyacinths in spring, but they will only bloom a little in the first year.

Hyacinths grown indoors may only be planted outdoors if there is no chance of it freezing again.

Plant tubers correctly

Dig planting holes that are at least twice as deep as the tuber itself. Keep a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters between the plants.

Caring for hyacinths in the garden

You only have to water in the spring until the end of the flowering period. Then the hyacinth gets no more water.

Fertilizing is not necessary. At best, you can rake in some compost around the plants in the fall.

Cut only the faded flowers. The green leaves must not be removed.

Hyacinths need frost

Hyacinths are hardy and do not need frost protection. On the contrary - due to frost, the tubers are stratified. Only then will they produce their characteristic flowers in spring.

Voles like to eat the hyacinth bulbs. Protect the tubers outdoors with wire baskets. The baskets must not be too narrow, because the onions will develop many daughter bulbs.
