Lilies should ideally be planted between March and May. At this time, they are usually available as young plants and flower bulbs in garden supply stores and hardware stores. Growing lilies from seed is less recommended. Germination can take up to three years.

Before planting, the location should be determined. Whether in the garden bed, on the balcony or in the living room, lilies love bright locations. However, it is best to protect them from direct sunlight. Outside, places in the semi-shade are recommended. Indoors, locations on the window sill that are not directly south-facing are suitable.

Before the bulbs are planted, a suitable substrate should be chosen. Lilies - both in pots and in beds - need a substrate with the following characteristics:
- high nutrient content
- moderate humus content
- loose texture
- good drainage
A minimum distance of 30 cm should be maintained from surrounding plants and 20 cm from other lilies. Lilies do well next to perennials as well as in front of bed roses and evergreen shrubs. If you want to extend the flowering period, you should buy several bulbs and plant them 5 days apart. Then they bloom one after the other and not at the same time.
A planting hole is dug with a shovel. It should be 2 to 3 times the diameter of the onion. The soil in it can be enriched with humus. After inserting the bulbs and covering them with soil, water them vigorously.
Do lilies tolerate later transplanting?
Outside of their growing season, lilies tolerate transplanting well. This procedure is best done in the fall between mid-October and mid-November. To do this, the bulbs are carefully dug up and placed in another place.

Watering immediately and up to 2 weeks after planting is important for the lilies to grow well. But not too much of a good thing! They do not tolerate waterlogging!
