Almost everyone has probably bought a primrose in a pot at some point. The flowers, which can appear in red, white, yellow, orange or other shades, make you want more. The good news: If you like the plants, you can easily multiply them yourself.

Primroses are sown between February and April

Primroses reproduce by self-seeding

Many primroses, such as the cushion primrose, reproduce by self-seeding. You do not need to intervene here. You should only note that you should not remove all faded flowers after the flowering period. With luck, self-sowing will develop new varieties with completely new properties such as different flower colors. In addition, over the years, a whole area of primroses can develop…

Sow primroses in a targeted manner

You can also do the sowing yourself. The best period is between February and April (end of May at the latest, for flowering in the following year). The seeds germinate best when fresh. Make sure they are no older than 10 months.

The seeds are light and cold germs. How to proceed when sowing:

  • Scatter seeds on seed soil
  • If necessary sprinkle the seeds very thinly with sand
  • Moisten the soil with a hand sprayer
  • ideal germination temperature: 10 to 15 °C (living room is unsuitable)
  • Germination time: 2 to 3 weeks

The seeds need cold for several weeks in order to be able to germinate afterwards. A consistently high level of humidity is also important. The sowing vessel, such as a seed tray, should be covered with a pane of glass or other material so that high humidity is achieved.

Divide primroses - only in strong specimens

Another method of propagation is root division. This method should only be used with older and larger (from a diameter of 15 cm) primroses. Above all, cushion primroses are grateful for a division - it promotes their flowering.

The rootstock should be well developed. It is dug up, cleared of earth and divided. The newly acquired specimens are planted elsewhere. Partially shaded to sunny places are suitable as a location.

tips and tricks

A convenient place for sowing is the balcony. Temperatures there in spring are often between 10 and 15 °C and the seeds can germinate well.
