Phlox is not one of the preferred plants, but it is also eaten when the snails cannot find better food. A sunny location and finely crumbly soil are not very attractive to snails. A snail fence offers more protection.

Phlox is not one of snails' favorite foods, but if nothing better is available, they will nibble on it

Here's what you can do to get rid of snails in your garden

Under no circumstances should you place a jar of beer in your flower bed. This is so tempting for the snails that they will walk long distances and even come to you from the neighbor's garden, including a picnic along the way. This will only increase the feeding damage unnecessarily. Collecting the snails with their eggs and preventive protection is actually more effective.

Set up snail fences as a preventive measure. You can buy these ready-made in specialist shops or build them yourself. The fences should be dug at least 15 cm into the ground and protrude 10 cm from the ground. At the top, the fence has a sharply angled edge that causes snails to fall if they crawl up there.

In the case of heavy infestation and a large garden, slug pellets also help. (7.49€) There are different types that are more or less poisonous. Check with specialty retailers and choose a variety that is safe for other animals. The active substance methiocarb is very toxic, also for humans, and is not recommended under any circumstances.

Snails don't like that at all

Snails like neither finely crumbly nor rough soil. Loosen the soil regularly or sprinkle gravel or other rough material in beds that are particularly threatened by snails. Do not water your phlox late in the evening, snails like it moist. Predominantly dry or sunny places they will rather avoid. These locations are ideal for the phlox.
