Normally, the care of horned violets is low. These perennials don't need a lot of attention and thrive without any time-consuming intervention. But every now and then it can come to an infestation of powdery mildew.

Don't water your horned violets too much to keep them from powdery mildew

Recognize and prevent powdery mildew on horned violets

Powdery mildew can be recognized by a whitish coating on the leaves and flowers. Those are the fungal spores. It doesn't take long for the stems and buds to become infected as well. If you don't act, you risk the plant 'infecting' surrounding growth.

Prevention makes sense for powdery mildew:

  • plant in an airy location
  • don't water too much
  • ensure good water drainage
  • don't over-fertilize
  • Maintain a planting distance of at least 10 cm, preferably 20 cm

tips and tricks

Mildew control is only worthwhile for valuable varieties. You can do this using a garlic, onion or horsetail broth. Spray the plant with it and at the same time cut off parts of the plant that are already affected.
