They are pretty to look at, the African violets. But are they completely safe? Are they safe to leave where they are or are they poisonous?

The African violet is slightly poisonous

Toxic for some, non-toxic for others

For adults, the consumption of African violets is harmless. They do not contain any toxic components. But small children and cats should be careful of them. African violets that are grown in particular are often contaminated with pesticides and fungicides. They shouldn't be eaten.

Anyone who only comes into contact with the parts of the plant, for example when repotting, has nothing to fear. But too much consumption of African violets can manifest itself in sensitive people in the following symptoms:

  • nausea
  • a headache
  • stomach pain
  • Vomit

tips and tricks

Give your African violet a regular check-up! Sometimes leaves or flowers fall off and land on the ground. There they are easily accessible for cats and small children.
