If you want to plant the iris, often referred to as sword lily, in the garden, then planting the rhizome bulbs will result in flowering much faster than raising the seeds. The exact planting time for the respective iris variety depends crucially on the species-specific flowering time.

Properly transplant irises after flowering
If you get propagated iris offshoots through division or buy the rhizomes from the appropriate specialist shop, then you should choose a period for planting after the flowering period of the iris. This usually means a planting time between July and October. How to enable:
- the growth of the roots at the new location
- a harmless overwintering of the iris outdoors
- with good care, the first flowers of the iris already in the year after planting
tips and tricks
If the irises in your garden only bloom weakly after a few years in the same location, you should dig up the rhizomes, divide them and replant only the young side shoots in a place with loose plant substrate.
