Very few tree fern species are considered hardy. This is possibly the main reason why many plant lovers prefer to put it in the apartment. But whether outside or inside - tree ferns should be overwintered.

Most tree ferns require winter protection; except hardy varieties like the New Zealand fern

Overwintering strategy outdoors

Tree ferns such as the Australian or Tasmanian tree fern tolerate certain sub-zero temperatures. They can be protected in winter in the following ways:

  • Cut the fronds in half or tie them together
  • Cover the trunk area with straw mats
  • Cover root area with bark mulch
  • Cover the ends of the fronds with fleece

Overwinter at home in a pot

A tree fern that has been a houseplant in the living room throughout the summer should be moved to a cool, unheated room in late fall. Temperatures between 5 and 10 °C and high humidity are ideal. Don't forget to water!

tips and tricks
