Gentian is used to the harsh climate of its original home, the Alps. The short-stemmed species are absolutely hardy. Gentian species that form longer stems need a little more care during the winter. Potted plants should also be protected from frost.

Overwinter gentian outdoors
In principle, gentian in the rock garden does not need winter protection. The flower also survives very low temperatures well - as long as it finds favorable site conditions, such as calcareous or acidic soil, depending on the variety.
In very rough locations, however, a light brushwood winter protection does not hurt.
Overwintering gentians in pots
Gentians in pots or flower boxes (€16.99) are not overwintered indoors, but outdoors.
Since the soil in the bucket freezes quickly, you should place the planters on insulating material and cover the gentian with brushwood. Fir branches may only be used with Koch's gentian, as they lower the pH value of the soil.
Place the pot in a sheltered spot. Terraces or balconies that do not cool down quite as much are well suited.
Caring for the gentian during the winter
- Cut back in late fall
- Cover in rough layers or in the tub
- Water when dry
You may only cut fully grown gentian shrubs. Freshly planted gentians cannot gain enough strength if they are pruned harder.
The roots of the plant should never dry out completely. If the winter is very dry, do not forget to water. This is especially true for the flower in the pot, as the soil dries out quite quickly. But avoid waterlogging.
tips and tricks
Outdoors, you should plant gentians in early spring. Then the plant has enough time to survive the winter. When planted in autumn, gentian perennials also need a light winter protection outdoors.
