Loved by some, feared by others and yet other plant lovers don't know them at all. The Columbine now grows in many gardens. But if you want to plant them, you should pay attention to the location!

The columbine likes it sunny and humid

Location requirements: Sunny to shady

These plants prefer a sunny position. But they also thrive in semi-shade. You can even find them in the shade. Therefore, columbines are valuable flowers for the garden. They grow where other flowering plants struggle.

The sunnier the location, the taller columbines grow and the fresher the soil should be. Experts say that these plants grow best in the migratory shade under tall perennials.

An optimal location, a rich sowing

In ideal locations, columbines seed profusely. They like to multiply by self-sowing. But be careful: If different varieties are together, there are often no descendants with the right variety. Therefore, it is advisable to plant the columbine varieties isolated from each other.

Soil requirements: loose and moist

The soil should be inspected before sowing the columbines. While the Alpine columbine tolerates calcareous soil, other columbines do not tolerate such conditions well.

Before planting, the soil is loosened and enriched with compost. Columbines for the pot should get a nutrient-rich potting soil. Columbines for the open ground are pleased with the following soil characteristics:

  • fresh
  • humorous
  • relaxed
  • permeable
  • wet
  • nutritious
  • sandy-loamy

tips and tricks

If you want to create a natural-looking location, plant the columbines together with hellebore and liverworts. These plants are also effective next to daffodils and larger perennials such as silver candles, hostas and hydrangeas.
