Dahlias are children of the sun and are not hardy. When it is safe to plant dahlias depends on the temperatures. The ground must no longer be frozen. Light night frosts in spring do not harm the dahlia as long as it has not yet sprouted.

At the end of April, the garden soil is in most cases completely thawed again. Now you can start preparing the planting sites for the georgines.

Wait a few more days to plant the dahlia bulbs to allow the soil to settle.

Cover the ground during severe night frosts

If, as expected, severe night frosts still occur, you should protect the planting sites with a covering of straw or leaves.

During the day, however, you should always remove the cover so that the sun can warm up the soil better to encourage the dahlias to thrive.

Early dahlias may only be planted at the end of May

Dahlias or Georgians can be grown indoors in pots.

Dahlias for the balcony are allowed outside earlier. If it does get cold again, the pot can simply be moved to a sheltered spot.

Only the stems and leaves are at risk from frost. If the dahlia has already sprout, you must protect these parts of the plant from freezing.

tips and tricks

If you can't wait for the first blooms of dahlias to brighten up the garden, soak the bulbs before planting them out. Take them out of their winter quarters two days before you plan to plant them and place them in a bowl of lukewarm water.
