Dahlias do not tolerate frost and are therefore not planted in the ground until spring. If you follow a few tips when planting out, you can enjoy the abundance of flowers of one of the most popular summer flowers for a long time.

Dahlias can be planted out from the end of April

The best time to plant dahlias

From the end of April you can plant the georgines in the flower bed. It is important that the earth is no longer too cold.

Even dahlia tubers planted in July will still develop many flowers. Then you should plant early dahlias.

Prepare the ground well

Dahlias do not tolerate waterlogging. Loosen the soil well and put mature compost, cattle manure (€18.80) or some horn shavings (€32.93) in the planting holes.

Don't be afraid to finish the planting holes a few days earlier. Then the nutrients are better distributed in the soil.

Drive georgines indoors or let them swell

The following tip from experts is helpful for gardeners in a hurry. Before planting, place the tubers in lukewarm water for two days and let them swell.

Driving them indoors will also make dahlias bloom earlier. Gently spray the tubers with a little water and place in a warm, bright spot.

Dahlias that have been brought forward are only allowed outside when no more frosts are to be expected. The tender shoots freeze off very quickly. It is better to wait until the end of May before planting.

Don't plant dahlias too deep

  • Dig the planting hole deep enough
  • Insert the dahlia bulb with the root neck upwards
  • fill up soil
  • Approach cautiously
  • Pour on georgines

How deep the tubers are planted in the ground depends on the dahlia variety and the size of the tubers.

The planting holes should be deep enough for the tuber to have enough space in it and a few centimeters of soil can be spread over the root collar.

Place the dahlia bulbs in the planting hole with the root neck up. New shoots develop on the root neck of georgines. If it is too deep in the ground, the shoots will take a long time to grow to the surface.

tips and tricks

Dahlias are particularly decorative when planted in groups. The magnificent flowers also come into their own in the perennial border next to sunflowers, delphiniums and monkshood.
