Admittedly, repotting is a messy business that tends to leave crumbs of soil on the kitchen floor or elsewhere. But repotting the cyclamen has a decisive advantage. The reward for this effort is a full bloom!

The cyclamen is best repotted in late summer or autumn

When is the best time to repot

Whether every year or every two years - the best time to repot the cyclamen is in late summer to autumn. Cyclamen usually goes dormant shortly after the end of the flowering period. About 8 weeks later it wakes up again and develops its first new shoots. Then it's time to repot!

Plant out and replant the tuber

First, grab the pot. If it's plastic, massage it from the outside so that the inside is pushed out. If the pot is clay, tapping the bottom while it rests upside down over your hand will suffice.

At this point, it's best to briefly submerge the root ball in a bowl of water. After that, the old soil can be better crumbled off the root ball. Cut off dead roots and divide the tuber if necessary (recommended only for older specimens).

Which soil is suitable

Before the cyclamen is placed in the new pot, which should be about 5 cm larger, a suitable soil is selected:

  • conventional potting soil or potting soil meets the requirements
  • like to loosen up with some sand or clay granules
  • The main thing: permeable, neutral to alkaline, rich in nutrients
  • do not use seed or potting soil

Place correctly in the soil and water

  • Insert tuber in the middle
  • cover with earth
  • Tuber should look 1/3 out of the ground
  • Press the soil down well
  • pour on
  • Increase watering in the near future
  • fertilize after 4 weeks at the earliest

Put the pot in the right place

The location should be bright but not sunny. Temperatures between 10 and 15 °C are perfect! The hallway, the stairwell, the balcony (frost-free) as well as the bedroom and bathroom are well suited.

tips and tricks

Since the cyclamen tuber is highly poisonous, you should wear gloves when repotting as a precaution and never leave the tuber unattended if small children or pets live in the household.
