In many modern houses there are no more basements or only converted rooms. Dahlia tubers are too warm to store in winter. In order to hibernate your georgines, you have to look for alternatives.

Dahlias are not hardy; but they can also be overwintered without a cellar

Overwinter dahlias in cool, dry rooms

The ideal winter temperature for dahlias is between four and eight degrees. If it gets warmer, the georgines will sprout too early.

As an alternative to the basement, rooms that are as dry and cool as possible are ideal:

  • Frost-free attic
  • Cool Greenhouse
  • Dry garage
  • Garden shed (€24.90) with frost guard

Do not store the tubers too densely. Air must be able to circulate between the dahlia bulbs to prevent the tubers from rotting or becoming moldy.

Overwinter dahlias in pots

Some hobby gardeners have successfully tried overwintering dahlias in pots. The pots must be kept as cool as possible and the georgines should only be given a little water every now and then.

The danger that the dahlia bulbs will start to rot in the ground is very high.

If you still want to give it a try, overwinter only those dahlias in the pot that are not particularly important to you. Then a loss is easier to cope with.

Overwinter dahlias outdoors

Overwintering dahlias outside can work in certain circumstances. In mild winters, georgine bulbs will not freeze to death if they are well protected.

Unfortunately, you don't know in advance how cold the winter will be. You should therefore dig up particularly beautiful dahlia varieties beforehand and overwinter in a cool, frost-free place.

tips and tricks

If you overwinter your dahlias without a basement, it is important to check the tubers regularly. Mold and rot are contagious. Break off infested bulbs and throw them away.
