The crown imperial (Fritillaria imperialis) belongs to the lily family and can easily survive the Central European winter outdoors with its bulbs that are deep in the ground. For the most magnificent inflorescences possible in the first year, you should plant the bulbs immediately after the flowering period.

Crown Imperial bulbs should be planted in late summer

Planting in late summer and autumn is ideal

When planting, crown imperial bulbs should be planted in the soil in such a way that they:

  • be as sunny as possible
  • be planted deep enough
  • with an appropriate drainage do not have to suffer from waterlogging

If the bulbs of the imperial crown are planted in the soil by August or September at the latest, then the plant has enough time to develop numerous roots until winter. The first flowers usually appear in the following spring, before a period of dormancy follows again in summer. It can be visually appealing to surround imperial crowns with less tall flowering plants so that the temporarily bare spots or wilting inflorescences do not disturb the flower bed.

tips and tricks

When propagating the imperial crown from seeds, it can basically be sown all year round. However, the seeds should always be sown relatively fresh, and they also need a certain cold phase before germination.
