If you don't have enough space in your garden to plant sunflowers, simply grow them in pots or tubs. Of course, the plants don't get that tall, but they still bloom very nicely. What you have to consider if you want to keep sunflowers in a pot.

Grow sunflowers as solitary plants
Sunflowers are heavy feeders, with roots digging deep into the earth. The plants cannot spread so well in pots or tubs. They therefore remain much smaller than sunflowers that you plant in the garden.
Only one sunflower should grow per pot so that the plants do not steal space and nutrients from each other.
However, you should always sow several seeds at once, as not all seeds will germinate. If several seeds have sprouted, the weaker plants are pinched off.
The right pot
The larger and, above all, deeper the pot, the larger the sunflowers will grow. Balcony boxes (€109.00) are only suitable for growing sunflowers. Later, the plants must be transplanted into individual pots or tubs.
Pots with a diameter of 30 centimeters are ideal. Heavy buckets are more stable. They don't tip over as easily when the sunflower is fully grown.
To prepare the planters:
- Clean pots well
- Poke drainage hole if not available
- Fill in nutritious potting soil
- Place on coasters
Prefer sunflowers for the bucket
To give preference to sunflowers, you can use balcony boxes or small pots.
Fill them with potting soil and plant the seeds about two centimeters deep in the soil. Always sow three to five seeds in a pot or in a seed hole. Keep the soil moist.
As soon as the plants are big enough, they are separated.
Place sunflowers in the pot as sunny as possible
Place the tubs or pots in as sunny a position as possible. South-facing balconies or terraces are ideal.
Water and fertilize the sunflowers frequently so that they can develop many flowers.
tips and tricks
Sunflowers that are intended for the garden can also be grown well in pots. Flowers that are brought forward have a big head start over plants that are not sown outdoors until the end of April.
