Before winter sets in and for cleaning, you need to empty your water butt. There are many methods for this, some are recommended, others rather impractical. One of the helpful variants is definitely the emptying by means of a hose. But how exactly do you go about doing this? Find out the answer here.

If you attach a tap with a hose to the lower area, you can water very easily

connect hose

In order to pump water from the water butt into a hose, you have to connect it to the vessel. The advantage of a hose is that you can create an autonomous watercourse that does not require you to intervene yourself. In addition, you succeed in transporting the water to a specific location, for example in the greenhouse. There are two ways of attaching the hose to the water butt:

  • simple method
  • to drill a hole

Simple method

  1. hang one end of the hose over the edge in the water butt.
  2. Secure the hose with tape.
  3. Lay the hose in the garden.

to drill a hole

  1. Drill a hole in the bottom of the barrel.
  2. Push the hose through.
  3. Seal the hole well.

The water pressure must be at least 0.5 bar so that the water runs independently from the water butt via the hose connection to your plants. In order to meet this requirement, you may have to place your water butt on an elevation.

Where to put the water?

The primary purpose of connecting a garden hose is to empty the water butt. Dumping all the water in the garden would not be a good idea. They would use it to flood all the beds and flush up the soil. However, a hose is ideal for directing the water into a gully. Alternatively, we recommend connecting the rain barrel to a second one with a hose.
