The unsightly plastic water butt looks much nicer when you cover it with wood. This is not as difficult as you might think at first. We have put together the simple assembly instructions for both square and round water butts. Have fun rebuilding.

With some wood you can turn a simple water butt into a pretty barrel

It is best to cover your water butt - whether round or square - with wood. The material is the easiest to cut. Additionally you need:

  • a jigsaw
  • a chop or miter saw
  • a cordless screwdriver
  • a conventional rain barrel
  • 80 wood screws (80 x 4.5mm)
  • a perforated strip or, if required, galvanized steel
  • 20 triangular slats made from residual or solid wood
  • 20 boards
  • 70 wood screws
  • Lacquer and wood stain

Use your old, seemingly unusable wood that was left over from the last fence construction.

Disguise round rain barrel

  1. Place the water butt on a wooden board and mark the outline.
  2. Cut out the circle with the jigsaw (36.18€).
  3. Seal cut edges with synthetic resin paint.
  4. Treat triangular panels with wood stain.
  5. Cut to the dimensions 15 x 15 x 30 cm.
  6. Cut the strips.
  7. Leave some leeway.
  8. Turn the rain barrel upside down.
  9. Lay out a strip and a triangular plate alternately at right angles.
  10. Fix with a tension belt.
  11. Place the previously made circular disc on the bottom of the barrel.
  12. Tighten the tension belt and thus press the boards to the plate.
  13. Drill holes in the individual boards and fix them to the plate with screws.
  14. Wrap the barrel with perforated tape at the top and bottom.

Dress up the square rain barrel

  1. Place the rain barrel upside down on a firm surface.
  2. Use the jigsaw to mark and slit the boards under the barrel collar.
  3. With precise work, there is no waste.
  4. Also use a tension belt to fix it.
  5. When manufacturing the floor, you have more freedom in terms of dimensions.
  6. Choose an appropriate area.
  7. Screw the bottom plate and the paneling together identically to the instructions for the round barrel.
