Algae are an important part of the ecosystem. But they are usually not wanted in the water butt. On the one hand they settle on the edge and can damage the material in the long run, on the other hand the water is then no longer suitable for hygienic use. In addition, the sight of algae in the water butt is not very nice. On this page you can read how you can take successful and biological action against aquatic plants.

In principle, algae in the water butt is not a big problem

When does algae need to be removed?

If you occasionally scoop some water out of the water butt to water your plants, a few algae won't pose a major threat. It's a different story when

  • You keep fish in the rain barrel.
  • Among other things, you get your drinking and shower water from the rain barrel.
  • These are dangerous algae species (e.g. blue-green algae).

time

In winter, you should generally empty your water butt before the first frost and remove plant debris and mud. Use this opportunity to free the walls from algae at the same time. So you don't waste water.
