If you have been dealing with the topic of wasp expulsion for a long time, you have certainly heard of ultrasonic devices. With such devices, annoying insects and rodents are to be driven out of the house. But does this method really work?

Ultrasonic devices are only effective against wasps to a limited extent

Frequencies that only some hear

We designate frequencies that are above our upper auditory perception limit as ultrasound. Other organisms, on the other hand, can certainly hear such areas. Many use ultrasonic frequencies specifically for communication and orientation. These include, for example:

  • Some whale species
  • bats
  • Small rodents

Whales and bats are known to emit ultrasonic locator calls to locate obstacles or prey.

But other animals are also receptive to ultrasonic frequencies, even if they don't use them themselves. You can still hear them. This includes mostly insects. For example some moths, mosquitoes or wasps.

Ultrasonic devices against wasp plagues

The high-pitched sounds that ultrasonic devices generate are said to be particularly unpleasant for the pests to be expelled. Above all, such devices are offered against mice, rats or martens, rather rarely against mosquitoes and wasps.

effect or not?

Unfortunately, like so many other methods of wasp repelling, ultrasonic devices do not have a monopoly on effectiveness. Even when used against mice or martens in the attic, there are different user experiences. In order to keep the animals away early, i.e. before they have really settled in, the sounds actually seem to be a deterrent.

And this also applies to wasps: Wasps will not leave an existing nest if you install an ultrasonic device directly below it. Their lives are far too short for that and the work that goes into building the nest is far too valuable.

However, an ultrasonic device can definitely keep the critters from disturbing you while relaxing on the terrace. However, it becomes more difficult when the relaxation is combined with eating - hungry wasps hardly do anything to avoid a table full of open jelly jars, sausage plates and fruit cakes. In order to build up the largest possible wasp-reduced area around you, you should ensure that the device has a long range.

Since rats, mice and other rodents such as rabbits perceive ultrasonic frequencies, as mentioned above, owners of these animals should refrain from using ultrasonic devices to repel wasps.
