Salvia sclarea prefers a spot in full sun where dry conditions prevail. In its natural range, which stretches from the Mediterranean region to Central Asia, the plant occurs in forests, on rocky slopes, in fields and along roadsides. It climbs altitudes of up to 2,000 meters.
