Like fire bowls, fire baskets are mobile fireplaces that do not have to be permanently installed in the garden. This is also the reason why you usually do not need official approval for installation - in contrast to the construction of a brick fireplace. Stacking and lighting the wood in the fire pit is not particularly complicated if you know how to do it properly.

The fire basket should stand on a fireproof surface

Which fuel is suitable for the fire basket?

First of all: Only well-dried wood in logs, pellets or other forms belongs in the fire pit. Waste from the garden, bulky waste, etc., on the other hand, has no place in it - the burning of waste is officially prohibited with a few exceptions throughout the year. The burning of treated wood - such as varnished wood or wood treated with tar - is also not permitted due to the toxic gases that are produced. Instead, finely chopped soft wood types such as fir, pine and spruce go in the basket to light the fire, hard wood types such as oak and beech ensure that the fire burns for a long time.

Proper positioning of the fire basket

Fire baskets may only be set up on fireproof surfaces - preferably on paved or stone floors. There is only limited installation on the terrace because many terraces are made of wood and are therefore potentially combustible. However, if your terrace has a stone or tiled floor, you can place the fire basket on it. However, keep in mind that these fireplaces can cause severe soot stains that require thorough scrubbing to remove. Setting it up directly on the lawn is also not recommended: the heat will quickly burn away the fresh green and literally leave behind only scorched earth. In addition to a solid, fireproof surface, you can also place the fire basket on tamped down bare earth.

Layer and light the fire basket

Stack a fire basket according to the following pattern and then light it:

  • Place crumpled newspaper and firelighter in the center of the fire pit.
  • As the first layer, lay thin twigs and/or softwood shavings loosely in a pyramid shape.
  • Above this is a second pyramid of slightly thicker softwood branches and logs.
  • Light the paper and the grill lighter.
  • Wait for the softwood to burn.
  • Now lay a few pieces of hardwood loosely on top.
  • Do not pack too much wood in the basket at once - otherwise the fire will smother.

Due to the risk of deflagration, no fire accelerators (e.g. petrol) may be used.

tips

Fire baskets in particular can also be used as a grill by simply placing a standard grill grate over them.
