Individually designed bird baths spread a special flair in the garden. The easiest way to implement your own creations at home is with concrete. This requires neither great manual skills nor any equipment. Just an idea, suitable material and some time.

Finally, the concrete drinking trough is ground down thoroughly so that the birds do not injure themselves

How should a bird bath be?

A bird bath is basically a wide bowl that is used to fill water for birds. It should be rather flat at the edge and deepen towards the middle. However, it should not be deeper than 10 cm. It is also important that the surface is neither sharp-edged nor too smooth. Otherwise the birds will slip when standing or bathing. Apart from that, you can design the bird bath according to your own ideas.

Notice:
The good thing about concrete is that the bird bath is winter proof and its owner can provide water for the birds even in winter when other bodies of water are frozen over.

concrete as a material

Concrete is a material that can be molded into almost any shape. Provided a form and a counter form are available, between which the concrete can in turn take the desired form. For a potion, these do not have to be specially made. You can make do with two artificial bowls. These materials and helpful utensils are required:

  • 2 different sized bowls made of plastic
  • Concrete, water, bucket and trowel
  • cooking oil and brush
  • pebbles or sand
  • abrasive sponge
  • Hand Brush

tips

Fine dust can be inhaled when mixing concrete and later when grinding the bird bath. Use a breathing mask for these two steps. You can get these in any hardware store.

Instructions for a bowl shape

  1. Generously brush the inside of the large bowl with some cooking oil to prevent the concrete from sticking to it later.
  2. The small bowl, on the other hand, has to be coated with oil on the outside.
  3. Mix the concrete as instructed on the packaging.
  4. Pour the concrete into the large bowl.
  5. Place the small bowl in the concrete and press down if necessary.
  6. Fill the small bowl with sand or pebbles to weigh it down.
  7. Let the whole thing dry in a rain-protected place for 2-3 days.
  8. Then carefully detach the concrete mold from the two shells.

Grind potions smooth

Work on the concrete drinking trough with the sanding sponge. The goal should be to eliminate all sharp spots. The shell should remain rough on the inside, while a smooth surface looks nicer on the outside. You can brush the fine dust off the trough with a hand brush.

Before you set up the bird bath, you can paint it with suitable colors as you wish.
