- Planting distance from tree to tree
- distance to the holding frame
- distance to the house wall
- Distance to neighboring property
Spacing is important when planting fruit trees. Distances to other trees, to buildings or to neighboring properties. Especially with espalier fruit, because it is usually cultivated in a very small space. What does that have to do with when and how much distance is necessary?

Planting distance from tree to tree
Even if it still takes some time until the branch structure is in place, the required space must be planned for when planting. How large the planting distance between two trees must be also depends on the trellis shape chosen.
A distance of approx. 2 m is required for free espalier forms. Trellis fruit with a simple U-shape, on the other hand, can be planted closer together. Inquire at the nursery which recommendation applies to the trellis fruit variety you have purchased.
distance to the holding frame
Trellis fruit requires a framework to which its branches are tied. Therefore, it must also be planted close to this. But not too close. The roots need space to develop in all directions. Even the visible parts of the tree need their freedom.
- the branches become thicker over time
- they need space without pressing against the framework
- air must also be able to circulate around the branches
- a distance of about 20 cm is ideal
distance to the house wall
It is not uncommon for espalier fruit to be grown on a house wall. There, too, the tree is planted at some distance from the trellis. This in turn should be mounted at least 10 cm away from the wall. This allows air to circulate and rain-soaked leaves dry more easily and quickly.
Distance to neighboring property
Trellis fruit is often planted near a neighboring property. Be it that there is no other space, or the trellis fruit should serve as a privacy screen. Here the legislators of most federal states are merciful and do not provide for any minimum distances to the neighbors for espalier fruit.
