Birch trees look extremely decorative both in the garden and in the pot. In addition, many of its components bring with them a wide range of uses. Reasons enough to grow a birch yourself. With the following tricks you can easily plant a tree of the genus Betula on your own.

Cultivation from seeds goes by itself

Birch grow with seeds

As the first and simplest variant, the birch offers its seeds in order to grow a young tree from them. You can pick them from the elongated infructescence of a free-standing birch tree between March and April, or you can simply buy them in the garden center. The pioneer plants, which are already designed for wind dispersal, will readily multiply if you simply scatter the seeds loosely over a pot of soil. Then turn it around with your hands and wait. As soon as the young birch that sprout from it has grown to about 15 to 20 centimeters, you can transplant the tree into a larger pot or into the ground in the garden.

Propagate tree from branch

  1. Cut off a strong branch at the top of any birch tree. He should:
  2. be at least 10 to 20 centimeters long
  3. bring solid wood down below
  4. have several eyes in the lower area
  5. be green on top
  6. Strip the leaves from the bottom.
  7. Above, remove larger leaves with scissors. The beginnings of blossoms are also removed, because they use up unnecessary strength.
  8. Place the cutting straight into a small pot.
  9. Place in semi-shade and keep moist.
  10. As soon as the first roots protrude from the pot, you can transplant the small birch.

Plant offshoots

Next to a birch there are usually many tiny specimens. As a third variant, you could dig up a small plant and plant it at home, just like the rooted young plant from the branch propagation. Digging is not a problem as the birch is a shallow root, so you don't have to dig deeper than a meter or two into the ground. The best time for this is April. Choose a sapling in the early stages of growth and carefully prick out the root ball with a spatula. Simply place in a prepared hole in the ground at the destination and water.
