Grasses should definitely not be missing in a beautiful garden. The banks of ponds, secluded seating areas or versatile perennial beds can be given a special charm with ornamental grasses. But before the actual system, you are spoiled for choice, because it is not easy to find the right one from the wide range.

Particularly tall ornamental grass makes a good solitary plant

The effect of grasses in the garden

Grasses in the garden have a relaxing effect and give lightness. Alone in the bed, they don't really come into their own, but with the right companions, the perennial bed becomes the focal point in the garden. Medium-tall grasses can be combined very well with flowering perennials. For example with

  • coneflower
  • phlox
  • sedum
  • asters
  • columbine

Low grasses can be used as ground cover, the very tall specimens, such as pampas grass, look more impressive than solitary perennials.
In any case, when accompanying plants, care must be taken to ensure that plants are put together that have similar site requirements. For example, the sun-loving riding grass should be combined with magnificent candles, which also prefer a sunny and dry location. In contrast to this, the forest cornmeal is planted with hostas, both plants need a shady spot to thrive.

Ornamental grasses as solitary perennials

The large grasses take up a lot of space in the garden and should therefore ideally stand alone. So they can develop well and offer an excellent eye-catcher. They are also well suited as privacy and wind protection for seats.

Examples of tall and sprawling grasses are:

  • the tall moor grass
  • the Chinese reed
  • the pampas grass
  • the elephant grass
  • the bamboo (also a grass!)

Create a grass garden

If you want to create a grass garden in autumn, you should not mix too many different grasses. The bed would later make a restless and disorderly impression. It is best to plant larger varieties in the background of the bed as a privacy screen. In the foreground, the medium-tall grass species are doing very well. With the right companions, they can make a pretty and versatile bed. Grasses are also just right for ponds. Overhanging grass fescues form a visual link between the shore and the water. They are reflected in the water surface and thus soften the hard border lines.
