Ornamental onions in the garden immediately catches the eye of every observer. The large flower balls shine decoratively between other perennials or grasses and loosen up the overall picture. In order for the abundance of flowers to develop in the coming spring, the bulbs of the ornamental onion must be in the ground by November at the latest.

Allium bulbs are planted in autumn

Worth knowing about the ornamental onion

Ornamental leeks belong to the leek family (Alliaceae), which also includes wild garlic (Allium ursinum), chives (Allium schoenoprasum) and leeks (Allium ampeloprasum).
The ornamental onion delights the garden owner in spring with its beautiful inflorescences, then with the decorative seed pods that can be used in arrangements or used for new sowing. After about three months, the ornamental onion goes back to its dormant phase. When the seeds are black and ripe, the above-ground plant dies.

The attractive perennial can grow up to 1.5 m tall, some flower balls are 25 cm in diameter. The leaves of the ornamental onion are rather unspectacular and have a strap-like shape. They often wither while the leeks are still in bloom.

plant ornamental onions

The ornamental onion thrives in a sunny location in the perennial bed. The soil should be fertile and well-drained. If you plant your ornamental onion bulbs in autumn, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose a sunny spot and dig a planting hole about 5 to 10 cm deep.
  2. Put a thin layer of gravel in the hole. This loosens the soil and serves as drainage.
  3. Place the onion on the gravel, the bottom of the onion facing down.
  4. Fill in the planting hole with soil.
  5. Place a small marker at the planting site. This way you can bypass them when hacking later.

planting partner

Ornamental onions harmonize in perennial borders with various other plants, e.g. B.

  • the prairie drop grass
  • the Mexican feather egret grass
  • hosts
  • columbine
  • phlox
  • peonies
  • steppe sage
  • cranesbill

It is particularly attractive when the perennials are colour-coordinated and flower in quick succession. In this way, the perennial bed becomes an eye-catcher in the garden over a longer period of time.

Cultivate ornamental onions

Ornamental onions are usually easy to care for and do not require any complex care measures. During the flowering period, dried leaves can be removed. Before sprouting, organic fertilizers stimulate growth.
The bulbs of the leek are hardy, but a loose cover with brushwood protects them from frost in winter.
