After long winter months in the dreary gray one is looking forward to the first signs of spring. Onion flowers that have been grown in pots are available in stores from January. Anyone who planted their own flower bulbs in pots in autumn will have to wait a little longer.

With spring flowers in the pot, spring comes sooner into the house and onto the balcony

The spring bloomers

Among them are primarily the onion plants, such as

  • tulips
  • daffodils
  • hyacinths
  • crocuses
  • snowdrop

But also primroses, violets, buttercups, pansies and plump daisies bloom early in the year.
All these spring flowers can be cultivated very well in pots or similar containers. If you missed the right time to plant in autumn, you don't have to do without the first spring greetings.
In large nurseries, spring bulbs are planted in pots early and kept cool to simulate winter. At the turn of the year, the pots are placed in warm greenhouses (€77.12), which give the bulbs the illusion of spring. The plants begin to sprout and the first buds appear as early as January. Within a few days they open their flowers on the windowsill and herald spring here.

Anyone who planted flower bulbs themselves in autumn will have to wait until the temperatures are a little warmer. Then the early bloomers will dare to come out into the light in the garden too.

Suitable planters

Here the hobby gardener can draw from the full. All possible containers can be converted into planters. Regardless of whether it is old terracotta pots, wooden boxes, zinc tubs, disused teapots or saucepans, all of these containers can be planted. However, it is important that there is a drainage hole so that rain or irrigation water can drain away. Pots without a hole should not be left outside in the rain, as waterlogging quickly forms here, which most bulbous plants cannot tolerate. Such pots should be protected and always watered carefully.

What to do with faded early bloomers?

In the garden, the faded spring flowers are cut off and can remain in the ground.
However, the early bloomers that have been brought forward cannot yet go into the garden soil, as it is usually still too cold for that. However, you can pot them and cultivate them in tubs, pots or flower boxes (€16.99). On sunny days they are allowed to go outside to a place sheltered from the wind. In the evening they come back to the house. As soon as no more night frosts are to be expected, the flower pots stay outdoors for good.
