With light, a very special icing on the cake can still be added to interior design. In the garden pond, spotlights above and below the water surface have one or the other practical effect in addition to the undeniable aesthetic effect.

What garden pond lighting can do
On a body of water, light installations can have a double effect. Because the reflecting water surface creates attractive light effects that are moved by waves and insect activity. Light cones directed upwards can also stylishly showcase the structure of border plantings.
Not to be forgotten is the practical benefit of better visibility. An illuminated pond edge can significantly reduce the risk of accidents at night.
In addition, night-time pond lighting can compensate for any lack of light during the day. So it can also be considered if your preferred pond location tends to get too little sun.
Advantages of garden pond lighting in brief:
- Chic decorative effect
- Better visibility of the pond (accident prevention)
- Possibly lack of light compensation
But there are also disadvantages. Because the night lighting is not particularly animal-friendly. If you keep fish in the pond, you should use subdued lighting and/or gradually dimming lights.
types of lighting
In principle, lights can be installed both above and below the water. The range in specialist shops is large.
- underwater spotlight
- shore spotlight
- floating lights
underwater spotlight
Underwater spotlights can have a particularly powerful effect by sending their light through the body of water. Above all, underwater and floating plants are staged in this way. However, the stress load for fish is higher here. Fortunately, there are now also underwater lights that are very easy to install and do not require any wiring, and which simply have to be lowered into the water.
shore spotlight
With floodlights on the shore, you have the advantage of being dry installable and serviceable. Especially if you opt for wired devices, that's a plus. When aligning, however, make sure that the cones of light are directed at an angle or straight down so that they are less dazzling.
floating lights
Lights floating on the water surface are particularly easy to use and install. They also cannot disturb fish, but they can disturb insects in the air.
technology
There are still many garden lights with halogen bulbs, but increasingly also those with high-current LED means. You are particularly modern and ecological with solar panels as a power source. When buying, look out for the VDE seal of approval for outdoor use.
