Hawthorn is usually found as a naturally beautiful hedge or solitary tree in local gardens. However, because it is known to be very tolerant of pruning, it can also be used by bonsai lovers as a hobby object that is tolerant of experimentation.

Basic information for the hawthorn bonsai
Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet' is a cultivated form of the two-pronged hawthorn. Aside from the lush, double, crimson umbelliferous panicle flowers, the hawthorn behaves much like its cultivated ancestor. He is also sun-loving and needs a nutrient-rich, moist soil. In addition, it is just as pleasingly pruning-tolerant and is quite suitable for bonsai culture.
Please note:
- Cultivate outdoors all year round
- Cutting from above and below
- Wiring allowed until growth phase
- Repot regularly
Hawthorn bonsai belongs outside
Even if you want to keep a hawthorn as a bonsai, you have to consider its very own needs. As a completely frost-hardy sun worshiper, it is a pure outdoor bonsai candidate. Even in the usual bonsai pot keeping, it doesn't get a place in the room at all. So bring him up in a sunny, airy place in the garden or on the patio all year round.
Cut regularly - at all corners and ends
Of course, regular topiary is the basics for every bonsai culture. In the case of hawthorn in particular, you should not only cut the crown, but also the roots. The branches and shoots are trained into the desired shape at regular intervals of 6-8 weeks throughout the growth phase from May to September. Each time you repot, you should also cut back the roots to maintain a balanced relationship with the above-ground part of the plant. You will also promote better root branching.
Wiring no problem
You can easily shape the branches of your hawthorn bonsai artistically. The wire method works well for this. In spring, wrap the shoots in a spiral, bending them as you want them to grow. It is important to note that before the growth in thickness begins in mid-May, the wire must be removed so that there are no unsightly traces of wiring.
Repotting and root pruning
To keep the hawthorn bonsai cared for and in good shape, you should repot it every 2 years. This is best done in spring. If necessary, place it in a larger planter. Carefully cut back the root system and replace about two-thirds of the substrate.
Fertilize
Fertilization is recommended during the growth phase. In this way you can also achieve a beautiful flower. Use organic fertilisers, if possible.
