The indoor bamboo is very popular because its bushy green brings a Far Eastern atmosphere to every home. With appropriate care, bamboo thrives well, but the leaves occasionally turn brown.

A discoloration of the room bamboo can be normal, but does not have to be

Prerequisites for a room bamboo to thrive

The indoor bamboo is not a real representative of its kind, but rather a bushy grass that looks similar to real bamboo. Among other things, it needs a lot of sun for good growth and is therefore a candidate for the window sill or the conservatory. However, care should always be taken to ensure that the plant does not receive direct sunlight. Humidity is just as important as light.
If you have a bright bathroom, this is the ideal location for a room bamboo.

The care

The bamboo does not make great demands on the soil, normal potting soil is sufficient.
A room bamboo needs a daily watering or always a filled coaster with water. Spraying the bamboo with water is well suited for a pleasant humidity level. However, waterlogging should be avoided.
It is best to use stagnant or rainwater, as the lime content is low here. New nutrients should be added to the potting soil with a universal fertilizer once a month.
In the winter months, less water is poured, but the indoor bamboo must not dry out.

Browning of the room bamboo

Although the indoor bamboo is an evergreen plant, it happens that more or less leaves turn brown and eventually dry up. There are various reasons for this:

  • some leaves change color in autumn and fall off, a natural process
  • If the leaves become pale, the reason is the lack of water, which can be remedied by watering abundantly
  • brown leaves also appear when the roots are damaged
  • brown leaves in summer also indicate a lack of water

If the discoloration of the leaves is discovered in time, there is still time to save the plant. The pale or brown leaves are cut off on the ground and the bamboo sprout again. However, if the destruction of the roots has progressed too far, the plant will not recover and eventually die.
