The room bamboo, bot. Pogonatherum paniceum is decorative and brings exoticism into the living room or conservatory. With just a little care, the plant can grow quite old. In addition, there is the possibility of multiplying the room bamboo with little effort.

The room bamboo can be easily multiplied by division

Propagating indoor bamboo

The room bamboo with its bushy leaves is always an eye-catcher in the apartment. Gladly one makes the effort to multiply it. This can be done through different methods:

  • by sowing
  • by root division
  • through root suckers

Propagation by seed

Some indoor bamboo species form spike-like bouquets with seeds on the culms. The ears are cut off and sown in small planters. Place the seeds in a warm and sunny place so that they sprout well. With regular watering, the first straws should appear after just a few weeks. Germination can be promoted by covering the planters with cling film. This creates a humid heat. However, the mini greenhouse must be aired regularly to prevent mold from forming.
As soon as the small bamboo shoots are about 10 cm high, they can be transplanted into larger pots.

Propagation by division

With good care, Pogonatherum paniceum will develop into a tall, bushy houseplant that will soon outgrow its pot. Then it can be easily repotted. If you want to continue cultivating your bamboo on the windowsill and not in a bucket on the ground, you can divide the plant during repotting. Proceed as follows:

  1. Take the bamboo out of its old planter.
  2. Shake off some soil and divide the root ball with a sharp knife.
  3. Now place both plants in prepared pots with nutrient-rich, fresh plant substrate.

Propagation by root suckers

The indoor bamboo has a habit of producing copious stolons in its planter. If you leave them with the mother plant, the ever-growing bush will eventually blow up the plant pot. It is better if you carefully remove the "children" when repotting the plant. If you want to multiply your bamboo, you can put these runners in a glass of water and put it in a warm place. After a while, roots will form. Once a proper root tuft has formed, the stolon can be cultivated in a planter with soil.
With this propagation method, ensure good ventilation and regular water exchange.
