When the days are getting longer again and the temperatures are rising, it's time to plant the balcony boxes with spring flowering bulbs. A colorful splendor lifts the mood after the dark winter days.

Spring fever comes up with hyacinths and pansies

General preparations

Before planting, the flower boxes (€16.99) must be checked for damage and replaced if necessary. Holes in the bottom of the box are very important. If they are dirty or even clogged, cleaning is required. The holes ensure that rainwater or irrigation water can run off unhindered, so that there is no waterlogging in the boxes. Waterlogging is generally not tolerated by early bloomers.
If the flower boxes are in order, suitable soil is selected and filled. Normal potting or potting soil that does not contain as much peat is suitable for balcony flowers. Peat makes the soil acidic and early bloomers in particular do not tolerate this well.

Which flowers are suitable for spring planting?

A colorful potpourri can be selected from the abundance of early bloomers. If it is still quite cool at night, pansies and horned violets can be planted first. They come in a wide variety and the plants tolerate even light frosts.

The sunny balcony

Only flowers that can tolerate many hours of sunshine a day should be planted here. From April/May, for example, the following flowers thrive:

  • the cushion flower or the blue cushion with blue flowers
  • the candytuft with white flowers
  • the gold spurge with a yellow flower
  • the pasque flower with delicate purple flowers

The shady balcony

Even balconies that are mostly or completely in the shade do not have to do without plants. The following are suitable for shade:

  • the busy Lieschen or Edellieschen with white to red flowers
  • the fuchsia with its filigree, hanging bells
  • the tuber and trailing begonia
  • various grasses and ferns

No matter which early bloomer you choose, regular and sufficient watering is important in any case, as well as a weekly dose of liquid fertilizer.

Plan spring planting in the fall

If you don't want to plant in the balcony box in spring, make sure you do so in autumn. Many bulb flowers can already be planted in the ground. However, care must be taken to ensure that the bulbs are hardy. Crocuses, snowdrops, anemones, winter lice, spring snowflakes and delicate wild tulips herald balcony spring from February.
